On August 20 – September 2, 2012 Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus conducts International Summer School

“Central and Eastern Europe in World War I: Views from Belarus”

Students, graduates and postgraduate students, teachers and individual researches, interested in the topic of World War I, are invited. Students, graduates and postgraduate students from Germany can receive grant to visit this International Summer School. Those who wish to participate have to fill in the form and send it by email (sumsc14@mail.ru). During the International Summer School it will be held a cultural program with guided sightseeing tour, visiting museums, cities, health resorts and Belarusian national parks Narach and Zaslawye, as well as memorial places of World War I.The organizing committee reserves the right to select applications for participation in the International Summer School. Participants are invited for a fee. Price – 700 euros (travelling is not included) or 1200 euros (with better living conditions). Individual invitations will be sent to participants.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN THE STUDIES OF THE
HISTORY OF BELARUS: CHALLENGES, ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROSPECTS

Contemporary historiography is characterized by variety of research issues and by increasing interest of historians to methodology, sociological and philosophical approaches. In this context, scholars are challenged by the necessity of application of abstract theoretical knowledge to the research practice. Development of adequate conceptual basis and pursuit for constructive theoretical approaches meeting concrete objectives of the specific research fields, search for effective methods for the analysis of empirical data have become a must for any scholar addressing issues of the history of Belarus.

These challenges have stipulated conference agenda:
Theoretical and methodological issues in historical writings and in the use of historical sources (problems of interpretation of political, economic, social and cultural trends and developments in Belarusan history)
Application of various theoretical approaches and terminology to the study of political, economic, social and religious history of Belarus.
Problems of periodization in Belorussian historiography (principles, approaches and possibilities for a theoretically consistent periodization of the history of Belarus).
Working languages: Belorussian, Russian, English.

• Background and factors of formation of the independent Republic of Belarus.
